1. General
1.1 Entry is open to all who live permanently in New Zealand or are a New Zealand resident.
1.2 Artists can enter through the official awards website: www.mollymorpethcanaday.co.nz
1.3 A separate entry form must be completed for each entry.
- Each artist may submit up to two entries.
- The entry fee is $40 per entry. Payment is made by credit card or PayPal only via the online portal.
- The fee is non-refundable.
1.5 All correspondence between the entrant and The Organisers is private and confidential and will not be shared with third parties.
2. Artwork
2.1 The artwork entered must be three dimensional.
2.2 All works are to be original. All submitters/entrants are to be the owner of the work(s).
2.3 All works must have been completed after 1st December 2020.
2.4 Works entered must not have been exhibited in another art award or competition prior to this exhibition.
2.5 Works must be robust. If artworks need to be maintained for the duration of the exhibition, this is the responsibility of the artist and any required maintenance must be negotiated with the Whakatāne Libraries and Galleries team.
2.6 The longest side of the artwork must not exceed 1500mm, must sit comfortably and safely within the gallery space and must be able to be carried by 2 people. Artworks to be suspended from the ceiling must not exceed a load bearing limit of 1.5kg / m².
2.7 Artwork installation instructions provided by artists after selection will be followed as closely as practicable by gallery staff. Hanging systems provided with the artwork must be appropriately rated for the artwork. Inappropriate hanging systems will be replaced where practicable by gallery staff. All installation, maintenance and operational costs not covered by the normal exhibition services of Whakatāne Libraries and Galleries are the responsibility of the artist. 2.8 Artworks must comply with health and safety standards; see 6.1 and 6.2
2.9 All works accepted for the final exhibition must stay on display for the entire exhibition period.
3. Entry Information
3.1 All entrants are required to submit 1 - 3 images of each artwork entered. They may also submit a YouTube video of the work.
a. High resolution images are to be uploaded in JPEG file format 1-3 MB, and no smaller than 800x600px - (1280x960px is recommended).
b. Images must be a true and accurate representation of the artwork entered.
c. One of the images supplied must show the work in its entirety.
d. Images, files and video links must not identify the artist.
e. Images will be used in the pre-selection judging process.
f. Images may be used in the catalogue and to promote the exhibition.
3.2 Artists are encouraged to submit an artist statement about each work.
a. Artist statements to be a maximum of 100 words.
b. The organisers reserve the right to edit the text for grammatical errors and exhibition standards.
c. Statements will be used in pre-selection and final judging of works.
d. Statements relating to finalist works will be included in the exhibition on the corresponding artwork label.
3.3 Entry information is final and cannot be added to by the entrant after submission.
3.4 On receipt of selected work the Organisers will inspect...
- For any damage or flaws.
- To ensure that the entry criteria are met prior to installation.
- That the artwork is appropriate for display in Whakatāne District Council’s gallery spaces.
4. Packing, artwork delivery and return for selected entrants
4.1 Selected entrants are responsible for the timely delivery of works prior to installation, and for the personal collection of unsold works following the closure of the exhibition.
4.2 Freight is the responsibility of the artist. Works that require couriering must have a return ticket attached. Gallery staff will pack artworks in original packaging where possible and arrange dispatch of artworks. If the work is sold, the courier ticket will be returned to the artist.
4.2.a DELIVERY TIMES
Personal Delivery: Saturday 22 January & Sunday 23 January 2022 (10am - 1:30pm)
Courier Delivery: Tuesday 25 January 2022 – Friday 28 January 2022 (9am – 5pm)
All works must be delivered to Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi - Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre, 49 Kakahoroa Drive, TRADE ENTRANCE VIA NEW WORLD SERVICE LANE, Whakatāne by Friday 28 January 2022 5pm.
4.2.b RETURN TIMES
Freight Return of works: Dispatch co-ordinated by the organisers. Personal Collection of works: Saturday 16 April 2022 (10am-1.30pm). Otherwise by appointment.
5. Insurance and security
5.1 All artworks are loaned on consignment to Whakatāne District Council, and are covered by Whakatāne District Council’s Fine Arts Insurance Policy. This insurance policy covers unforeseen damage or loss for artworks on consignment while on the premises, and in transit to and from the gallery.
5.2 Surveillance cameras are in operation throughout the exhibition period.
6. Health and safety considerations
6.1 Any exhibitor with an entry that may have specific legal, environmental, safety or security applications to be met shall undertake to carry out these procedures, and to meet the standards and policies of Whakatāne District Council prior to installation. Note: selected works with electrical components must be tested and tagged.
6.2 Untreated natural materials that might carry ‘wildlife’, or decay in the duration of the exhibition cannot be accepted due to the proximity of the Whakatāne Museum Heritage display. Contact arts@whakatane.govt.nz if further clarification is required.
7. Judging process
7.1 All submissions will go through pre-selection judging based on the digital images and statements provided. The works will be judged on merit by three pre-selection judges. Each judge will score entries independently. Collated scores determine which works are selected for exhibition. NOTE: Pre-selection judges will not be given names of entrants; submissions will be identified by entry number.
7.2 All artists will be informed of the outcomes of pre-selection judging via the website on or before Friday 23 December 2021.
7.3 All selected works must be delivered to Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre within time frames set out in 4.2.a
7.4 Final judging will be carried out by the Guest Judge following the installation of selected works. Final judging determines award winners. The Guest Judge will have access to the physical artworks and artist statements. Artist names will be covered for judging.
7.5 Award winners will be notified by phone on the evening of Wednesday 9th February 2022. All winners are encouraged to attend Opening Night to receive their award.
8. Sale of artworks
8.1 All works are for sale, and loaned on consignment to Whakatāne District Council. Sale price includes 35% commission to be taken by Arts Whakatāne. (The 35% component includes GST).
8.2 Artwork sales - Relevant artists will be notified of sales by the Co-ordinator.
9. Media and publicity
9.1 The Organisers may use images provided by entrants (with credit/attribution) in Molly Morpeth Canaday Award related media outputs.
9.2 Additional images of works may be taken in the gallery space, and circulated to promote the exhibition in print and on digital sites/social media (with credit/attribution), and may appear on their social media Facebook and Instagram.
10. The exhibition
The exhibition will be on display at the Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre from Sunday 13 February, until Saturday 9 April 2022.
11. Covid 19
The Molly Morpeth Canaday Award will still go ahead at ALL Covid 19 levels. The MMCA team will be closely monitoring the levels and will update the website and all entrants with any updates that affect the award opening event and exhibition.
Restrictions at Levels 3 and 4 will mean the awards will be completely digital.
Restrictions at Levels 1 and 2 will mean the museum will be open for exhibition.
